Well I think the Cold War was a complete new level of paranoia with the fear that other's might use the AorHbomb on us once we had used it on others which we kind of justified and buried real fast. The paranoia then required a full power defense industry all the time rather than when there is an imminent war which can only happen if we have a constant sense of imminent war. and now imminent terrorist attack to replace the cold war and keep the defense and intellignece community going. Remember how demoralized the intelligence community was at the end of the Cold War!! It was like Russia's Vietnam in Afghanistan was the worst thing that ever happened to them. They succeeded much too well which is good lesson for the war on drugs, don't get too good or you will be out of a job and you won't be able to grab all the confiscated property and money anymore.It is all about job security and with the way our core economy is going these systems are becoming more and more critical because there isn't to many other good jobs out there but how to raise taxes for government services and wars and the anti-terrorist business?? well we seem to be doomed because our military industrial complex on top of a tiny base and like the Soiet Union about to topple over unless they can shake down other countries for.their defense as mercentary armies.So it is a losing imperial power world we are facing but the world in total is facing extinction if we don't get free of war as an economic engine and the rape and pillage get rich quickism to a sustainable no growth, zero population growth vision of living within the means of our planet.
